((OOC: oh my god, you guys, what am I even doing? Late intro is so late because of NaNoWriMo and I HAVE NO IDEA WHAT I'M DOING, besides. Enjoy :'D Sorry if I derp this up like the derp I am. Also, feel free to add your own character tags. Tag add new/delete and add/remove to entry is set to any user because I am too trusting))

[the feed shows Douglas Cartland blinking in the middle of a random field in the sunlight, shielding his eyes from the sun. He's got his 'gear in one hand and his Shuckle in the other and he's staring hard into the screen]

How the heck do I... how am I supposed to work this thing? Is it like a phone? One of those new video phone things or...

[pause]

Oh, it's recordin'. Okay. Well uh... not sure if anybody can hear this but I'd really like to know where I am. Some woman gave me lunch and shoved me outside when I woke up this morning, but that's not really important. What I really wanna know is where I woke up.

Hello? Anybody listenin'?

[he frowns]

There's no way this is Maine.

[he resists the urge to say "I have a feeling I'm not in Kansas anymore", because this isn't the time at all]

Sounds like it's kinda just touch and go, right? Is there any place you'd recommend goin'?

That depends. Are you a small town guy or more of a city person?

Always kinda liked the city, I guess. But that just might've been because it was more convenient for work. I was a detective back home.

[c: oh hi.]

Looks like we're in a similar line of work. Special Agent Dale Cooper, FBI.

[And it feels pretty damn good to introduce himself with his title again.]

Nice to meet ya, Agent Cooper. I'm Douglas Cartland. Just a private detective, nothin' fancy.

[a smile]

FBI, huh? Always thought that'd be pretty interestin'. What's it like?

Good to meet you too, detective. Police work doesn't have to have a nice label to be effective.

[Which he says with a polite smile back - but there are plenty of private eyes that are sort of sketchy in what sides they choose, so Coop will decide later if he thinks Douglas is a good guy or not. That said, the first impression is definitely ins his favour.]

FBI ... certainly keeps you busy. But I doubt it's too different from other means of upholding the law when it comes down to it, other than a dramatic flair for the crimes committed and what's printed on top of the paperwork.

[That earns a grin from Douglas]

Yeah, guess you're right. I mean, we're all fightin' for what's right in the end, so I guess it can't be all that different. It's all the law, plain and simple. Even if some of it's more intense. Like the FBI, I'm guessin'. I don't exactly deal with stuff like you guys do in my line of work; more like kidnappings and missing persons, stuff like that. Sounds like the stuff you do'd take a lot outta ya.

[He nods - it's true. His work often leaves him feeling drained, and though Coop's generally a cheerful guy, that nod is pretty solemn as a result.]

It sure does. But we all have our jobs to do, intense or not.

[he nods, smiling slightly]

Yeah. Somebody's gotta take care of everything, right? And it's always better to do what ya love.

[he shakes his head]

Sometimes I miss bein' a cop, but I never really had it in my heart to shoot somebody. Guess it's kinda why I got outta the business, after my son ended up gettin' himself shot.

From: [personal profile] tapestodiane
I'm sorry to hear that.

[He doesn't have a lot else to offer, but it's sincere. He doesn't want to ask if said son lived or died, but something tells him it's the latter. It almost always seems to be.]

It's okay. It's been... huh, so long I can't even remember. Twenty years, maybe more? Probably sounds awful that I forgot. [a nervous chuckle]

To some, maybe. We all have different means of dealing with loss.

Guess I probably forgot on purpose. I was too weak to deal with it, just sorta tried to forget it had ever happened at all. Until the past couple of years.

I'm guessin' you're better at dealin' with it than me. You seem like a pretty stable guy.

[Oh, Douglas. He ... really really isn't. Not that he's going to let that on too clearly.]

Rule of thumb in our line of work is never to judge too quickly.

[Which he notes with just the kind of tone that indicates there's something to that, but he carries on in a fashion that means that there's not really room for comment.]

The mind has its way of protecting us and not all of them are ways we understand. Forgetting is still dealing. Maybe not the best kind, but you can't really call it anything else.

[he nods slowly, giving him a curious look, but he doesn't press the matter farther. He can sense something there that makes him wonder]

I guess so. Not even gonna pretend I understand some of the stuff it does. Never was much of a psychology buff or anything like that.

[At that, he grins briefly.]

I studied it in college along with prelaw and anthropology. Provided a good solid foundation for the rest of my training .. but I will freely admit that it didn't offer a lot of insight to the mystery of the mind.

[Douglas grins back]

I guess some things are always gonna be a mystery. People seem like they're probably one of 'em.

That's a pretty impressive list though, Agent Cooper.

Considering people are the most complex organisms we've found, that shouldn't come as a big surprise.

[And what's all the praise, Douglas? Coop bows his head in a sort of nod of thank you, but doesn't quite answer - lets the first statement be the topic.]

Yeah, I gotta say sometimes I wonder if people are too complex. All this capacity for good and evil... do we really need all that? Seems like we'd all be better off if maybe we were capable of a little less.
