[Douglas is just sort of sitting around at the bar in the inn, and he's got the 'gear propped up on his bag, which is still filled mostly just with the basics and the things Heather sent him. He's pretty much moved permanently into a room in the inn at this point. Sheldon and Kal-El are fighting over some berries and come pretty near to knocking the 'gear over several times, so it's a while before Douglas can actually pay any attention to the feed he's sending out]

It's been a while since I've done this, hasn't it? Feels like it's been a while, anyway. This time I've actually got a point, though. I've been doin' some odd detective work for people around town lately, and it's got me thinkin'. I know there might not be much demand for this sort of thing, but if anybody needs to hire a private detective, you can contact me anytime. Figured it might do some good to advertise.

[then Kal-El knocks the 'gear over and Douglas sends him a scowl and holds it in his hands rather than risking it getting knocked over again]

I don't charge much. Really just got my room and food expenses to cover, so I'll do whatever you need for pretty cheap. Just send me some details if you have something you want me to work on.Got about twenty years of experience, and there's not a lot I can't handle, I like to think.

[Douglas takes the hand and shakes it, still smiling. He's happy to talk to Coop again. He's always enjoyed their conversations and meeting him in person is pretty exciting]

Yeah, same thing for me. But I guess breezy's the default setting around here. Can't say I miss all the craziness back home. Gets a little slow now and then, but I can't complain.

[he glances at the puppy]

So, who's this guy?

_{[And Coop's mind is on the same track - he's of the impression that him and Douglas really aren't so different, and he's got a likeness and respect for the older man because of it. He nods, grins in agreement at the statement.]}

_{[Slow here? Yep. And though he sometimes misses some of the action, it's something he doesn't like to think about - but right now, he's content with the quiet pace of Johto.]

This, _{[and he says it like he's presenting someone of great importance, but not without a spark in his eye,]} is Harry S. Truman. But to avoid that mouthful I call him Sheriff.

_{[And Sheriff looks at Douglas with great concentration, like he's considering him.]}

[it's nice having someone to relate to around here, and Douglas will never deny that he appreciates their friendship. And then at the introduction, he chuckles a bit, noting the intense stare of Sheriff]

Well, then it's an honor to meet you, Sheriff.

He sure looks like he knows that I'm all about. He can't read minds, can he?

Not to my knowledge, no. But I will admit that I wouldn't put it past him.

_{[Sheriff seems to accept Douglas, though, and curls up in Coop's lap - still watching him, but now with not so much ... well, judgment.]}

There really is no telling with these fellows, after all.

I wouldn't be surprised, either. I sure looks like he's concentratin' hard enough to.

[Douglas is a little comforted by the loss of those piercing eyes and he turns most of his attention back to Coop, though he keeps the corner of his eye on him just because he feels like he should watch the little guy like he's watching him]

Yeah, they seem to do some weird stuff. I never really think about the fact they they have all these abilities and stuff until one of mine does some crazy thing.

Well, I'm glad to hear you haven't given up on writin'. Heather let me read one of your books back home, and I liked it. One of the true crime novels.

Sounds like a plan. Guess I better make sure to find some. Hope I can find 'em before the big battle.

Well, I can definitely hold my own in any eating contest, I guess! We got separated a while back, when I suddenly woke up in New Bark Town and time had passed. I don't even remember what happened.

[He nods in agreement, leaning his forearms on the bar and looking amused.] Yeah, I know all about that.

What kind of investigations did you do?

[Because he's kind of considering whether it would be a good idea to hire Douglas himself, with all the people showing up from his world and several of them not going to tell Envy much of anything. ...And the question doubles as a distraction from 'so Envy what did you used to do'.]

[Samus is happy to accept another berry! Sheldon is totally okay in her books now, and she tells him so in Pokespeak.]

Hmm... well, maybe you were back home for a while. That seems to happen when people leave. Do you have some close friends I can ask about them? Anybody you think would have wanted to take care of your Pokemon for you?

Thought it came off as real well informed. Seems like you sure did your research. And the protagonist... I liked that guy.

Mine seem pretty low-key. Except for the zubat but I keep him under wraps, 'cause he hates me.

What do they do to make sure you don't forget?

Mostly investigations into infidelity, things like that. A few kidnappings... and sometimes I'd look into people, for various reasons. Nothin' too exciting.

[Sheldon is a little shy and he just wibbles a little before he returns the sentiment]

Sure.

Better hurry, though.

I think that's probably what happened, it just... doesn't even feel like I left. And yeah, I do! I travel with Riku, and Leon holds on to important stuff for me.

_{[He raises his eyebrows at that, entertained by the idea of an angry zubat.]}

Mayhem, mischief, shenanigans. They like to play pranks on me and each other when they think I'm not paying attention.

_{[He sounds pretty fond of it, though, despite everything.]}

[Douglas writes these names down and nods]

Alright, I'll check with those guys, and I'll ask around at the adoption center. We'll get your Pokemon back, don't worry.
