[the feed shows Douglas Cartland blinking in the middle of a random field in the sunlight, shielding his eyes from the sun. He's got his 'gear in one hand and his Shuckle in the other and he's staring hard into the screen]

How the heck do I... how am I supposed to work this thing? Is it like a phone? One of those new video phone things or...

[pause]

Oh, it's recordin'. Okay. Well uh... not sure if anybody can hear this but I'd really like to know where I am. Some woman gave me lunch and shoved me outside when I woke up this morning, but that's not really important. What I really wanna know is where I woke up.

Hello? Anybody listenin'?

[he frowns]

There's no way this is Maine.

[he resists the urge to say "I have a feeling I'm not in Kansas anymore", because this isn't the time at all]

...you don't miss your friends? Or your family?

[a pause, and then he shakes his head]

I don't really have much of those, I guess. Most of my family's dead, same with friends. When you get to be this age, people start... ya know... succumbin' to old age. It's just natural. Heather's really the only friend I've got left.

Oh... I'm sorry!

[he shakes his head]

Naw, it's okay. You come to expect it when ya get old. Death isn't so depressin' when you know they're probably better off.

I...I guess...

[She's never had anything or anyone die before. Even talking about it is strange.]

Hey, cheer up. It's not to bad.
And anybody ya lose is still with you, even if ya can't see 'em.

...Really?

[he nods, smiling]

Really. It's like how it doesn't feel like you're really apart from somebody when they're on a trip or somethin' when you care about 'em, 'cause you still got 'em in your heart.

[he rubs the back of his head awkwardly]

Besides, death isn't the dark, tragic thing people think it is. It's actually kinda peaceful, from what I've seen over the years. And some people even say it's just the start'a your next life. So it's nothin' to be sad about.

Oh!

[She gives a nod, understanding now.]

Well... that doesn't sound so bad, then!

[he smiles a little, glad he's managed to make her feel better]

Yeah. And at least you've got a long time before ya gotta worry about it at all. You're still a youngster. [he chuckles]

[She gives a huff.]

I'm not young! I'm eighteen!

[he smiles slightly at that]

Hey, I'm pushin' sixty in a couple'a years. Pretty much anything's young compared to me, right?

Sixty? Wow!

[Rapunzel, that's nothing to be amazed over.]

[a chuckle]

Yep, I'm gettin' up there. Nothin' wrong with bein' old though, right? Wish I was as wise as I should be for my age though.

Oh, no! I bet you've learned so much! I've only been in Johto for a month and a half, but I've learned so much! If you're sixty, I bet you know a lot!

[he chuckles]

Well, I guess I have learned a lot about stuff. I'm not gonna claim to be wise or anything, but it's hard not to have seen a lot at this age.

Oh! Oh! What kind of things do you know?

[Rapunzel likes to learn things.]

[he chuckles softly]

Mostly stuff about solvin' crime, really. Never really cared about much else. But I can sure catch a bad guy, let me tell ya. [his smile is slightly proud]

Solving crime? Like... bad men?

[he nods]

Yeah, bad men. Most of the time. Sometimes they were good men who did bad things, but I stopped 'em all the time.
But as a detective I mostly just find people who're missin'. Not so much crime-fightin' anymore.

...Mother says the world is full of bad people who want to hurt me.

[Douglas frowns at that]

I think your mother's wrong. Sure, there are bad people, but there're a lot more good people than bad. There're people you can count on, and people who'll protect you.

And as for the bad guys,there's always somebody who'll stop 'em.

Really?

[She's looking so hopeful right now.]

I haven't met any bad people in Johto so far... but... Mother must know what she's talking about...!

Trust me, there are a lot more good people than bad. I've seen the worst of the worst, and they don't outnumber the good people, not by a long shot. For every bad person, there are ten good ones who'll stop 'em.
