[the feed shows Douglas Cartland blinking in the middle of a random field in the sunlight, shielding his eyes from the sun. He's got his 'gear in one hand and his Shuckle in the other and he's staring hard into the screen]

How the heck do I... how am I supposed to work this thing? Is it like a phone? One of those new video phone things or...

[pause]

Oh, it's recordin'. Okay. Well uh... not sure if anybody can hear this but I'd really like to know where I am. Some woman gave me lunch and shoved me outside when I woke up this morning, but that's not really important. What I really wanna know is where I woke up.

Hello? Anybody listenin'?

[he frowns]

There's no way this is Maine.

[he resists the urge to say "I have a feeling I'm not in Kansas anymore", because this isn't the time at all]

[a pause, and then he shakes his head]

I don't really have much of those, I guess. Most of my family's dead, same with friends. When you get to be this age, people start... ya know... succumbin' to old age. It's just natural. Heather's really the only friend I've got left.

[there's a pause, and then Douglas recognizes that face and voice. Oh no]

Vincent, right?

[his eyes narrow]

What to ya mean, "late"?

Oh... I'm sorry!

[he shakes his head]

Naw, it's okay. You come to expect it when ya get old. Death isn't so depressin' when you know they're probably better off.

Yeah, she's one of my best friends.

I...I guess...

[She's never had anything or anyone die before. Even talking about it is strange.]

You're from Heather's world?

[Yep, he definitely knows Heather. He also knows her reaction to the last few people who showed up from her world, so he's cautious, but he's also a pretty good judge of when people are lying. And Douglas doesn't look it.]

[So have a grin.] She was one of the first people who talked to me when I showed up.

[and a bright smile comes over Douglas' face at that, and he looks quite a bit younger]

That's great. I'm glad to hear Heather has friends here. I was worried about her.

[a pause]

Oh, I'm Douglas Cartland, by the way. Guess I forgot to introduce myself.

Hey, cheer up. It's not to bad.
And anybody ya lose is still with you, even if ya can't see 'em.

[he nods slightly]

Yeah. From what she's told me there're a lot of people here from our world. Some of 'em aren't exactly people I'd wanna see again.

[and then he grins back]

She's pretty good at that, isn't she? Makin' ya feel welcome, I mean?

That depends. Are you a small town guy or more of a city person?

Always kinda liked the city, I guess. But that just might've been because it was more convenient for work. I was a detective back home.

Looks like we're in a similar line of work. Special Agent Dale Cooper, FBI.

Nice to meet ya, Agent Cooper. I'm Douglas Cartland. Just a private detective, nothin' fancy.

FBI, huh? Always thought that'd be pretty interestin'. What's it like?

Good to meet you too, detective. Police work doesn't have to have a nice label to be effective.

_{[Which he says with a polite smile back - but there are plenty of private eyes that are sort of sketchy in what sides they choose, so Coop will decide later if he thinks Douglas is a good guy or not. That said, the first impression is definitely ins his favour.]}

FBI ... certainly keeps you busy. But I doubt it's too different from other means of upholding the law when it comes down to it, other than a dramatic flair for the crimes committed and what's printed on top of the paperwork.

You seem like you've been here for a while. Hope I'll end up as seasoned as you one day.

A photographer, huh? Sounds like it'd be interesting. I was never really the creative type, myself.

[he's totally not nervous at that. No way. Not at all]

[That earns a grin from Douglas]

Yeah, guess you're right. I mean, we're all fightin' for what's right in the end, so I guess it can't be all that different. It's all the law, plain and simple. Even if some of it's more intense. Like the FBI, I'm guessin'. I don't exactly deal with stuff like you guys do in my line of work; more like kidnappings and missing persons, stuff like that. Sounds like the stuff you do'd take a lot outta ya.

Yeah, I've met one or two of them. Not the nicest people. [Not that Envy can talk; he's been behaving in Johto (in part thanks to meeting people like Heather) and he's able to act friendly enough, but back in his world he's definitely one of the villains.]

Sounds about right. I was lucky to meet her, she's a good person to have as a friend.

What's your name, anyway?

Nope. Lotta crazy cultists, and people like that.

[oops, he forgot all about being polite]

Cultists, huh? [He'd figured it was something like that, from Vincent using the title 'Father' and Heather telling him it was some sort of organization, but he doesn't have many details. And he's been curious as hell about it.]

Envy. Weird name, I know, but my mother had an interesting sense of humor.
