[the feed shows Douglas Cartland blinking in the middle of a random field in the sunlight, shielding his eyes from the sun. He's got his 'gear in one hand and his Shuckle in the other and he's staring hard into the screen]

How the heck do I... how am I supposed to work this thing? Is it like a phone? One of those new video phone things or...

[pause]

Oh, it's recordin'. Okay. Well uh... not sure if anybody can hear this but I'd really like to know where I am. Some woman gave me lunch and shoved me outside when I woke up this morning, but that's not really important. What I really wanna know is where I woke up.

Hello? Anybody listenin'?

[he frowns]

There's no way this is Maine.

[he resists the urge to say "I have a feeling I'm not in Kansas anymore", because this isn't the time at all]

[he offers her a little smile, but it fizzles out and is replaced by a look of complete and utter shock and something else, something almost like fear, when she says that last part]

I'm guessin' those ones aren't as friendly?

[Douglas isn't quite sure what to make of Henry's expression. He's starting to wonder if he should be trusting this guy's expressions at all for all the good they're doing him]

Her name's Heather Mason? She's uh... she's blonde, kinda short? We were friends back home.

[and now he's just sort of rambling because he's never sure how to deal with awkward people]

[Douglas jerks back from the screen for just a moment when he sees it; last time he saw something remotely like that it wanted to eat him]

Oh I uh...

Are they gonna kill me?

[and that just kills Douglas' planned next move. So much for finding a way out, then]

[a beat, and he stares and blinks and stares again]

This isn't like that Otherworld place or anything, right? 'Cause these monsters and...

I wish I knew what was goin' on. It's all a blur to me.

[he blinks]

[he says it slowly, as though he's trying to digest its meaning]

Does anybody know? Seems like we're all just stuck here from what I've seen. Is this place as bad as I'm worryin'?

[he relaxes. Just a little, mind you. Relaxes as much as somebody who's been suddenly yanked from their homeworld can relax. He blinks down at his Shuckle and then at the thing eating the metal]

So... how many of these monsters are there?

I... am not sure. They give us a talking box that tells us these things.

Cliffjumper pays more attention to it than I do.

I can't say I know what the Otherworld is, but I'm willing to bet this is radically different.

I know it doesn't make much sense, but... y'kinda... get used to it here after awhile. Time works funny.

This place is full of 'em. The wild ones will attack more often than not- that's why you've got that little guy.
