[the feed shows Douglas Cartland blinking in the middle of a random field in the sunlight, shielding his eyes from the sun. He's got his 'gear in one hand and his Shuckle in the other and he's staring hard into the screen]

How the heck do I... how am I supposed to work this thing? Is it like a phone? One of those new video phone things or...

[pause]

Oh, it's recordin'. Okay. Well uh... not sure if anybody can hear this but I'd really like to know where I am. Some woman gave me lunch and shoved me outside when I woke up this morning, but that's not really important. What I really wanna know is where I woke up.

Hello? Anybody listenin'?

[he frowns]

There's no way this is Maine.

[he resists the urge to say "I have a feeling I'm not in Kansas anymore", because this isn't the time at all]

Trust me, there are a lot more good people than bad. I've seen the worst of the worst, and they don't outnumber the good people, not by a long shot. For every bad person, there are ten good ones who'll stop 'em.

Rule of thumb in our line of work is never to judge too quickly.

The mind has its way of protecting us and not all of them are ways we understand. Forgetting is still dealing. Maybe not the best kind, but you can't really call it anything else.

[he nods slowly, giving him a curious look, but he doesn't press the matter farther. He can sense something there that makes him wonder]

I guess so. Not even gonna pretend I understand some of the stuff it does. Never was much of a psychology buff or anything like that.

[he tries to smile, but he can't. He really wants to hug you right now, Heather]

I guess not. But you can wish it never happened.

[Douglas smile fondly, nodding]

Really. Ya don't have to worry about it. The world's not as bad of a place as some people are gonna try and tell ya it is.

But... my Mother's seen the world. And she said the world is full of bad people.

I studied it in college along with prelaw and anthropology. Provided a good solid foundation for the rest of my training .. but I will freely admit that it didn't offer a lot of insight to the mystery of the mind.

Don't see what good that would really do at this point.

_{[But she heaves a sigh.]}

One thing I can say is... this place is better. WAY better.

It seems better.

[he smiles]

A lot more cheerful than back home, at least.

I guess some things are always gonna be a mystery. People seem like they're probably one of 'em.

I've seen it too, and she's wrong. There're bad people, but there're more good people than bad.

Considering people are the most complex organisms we've found, that shouldn't come as a big surprise.

Yup. Those things. According to the PokéDex, there's at least 386 of them known to... the locals, I guess. So there's probably more somewhere that just haven't been found yet.

Geez. So they're like their own ecosystem or something'?

Yeah, I gotta say sometimes I wonder if people are too complex. All this capacity for good and evil... do we really need all that? Seems like we'd all be better off if maybe we were capable of a little less.

So maybe you should base what ya think of the world and the people in it on what you've seen yourself, instead of listenin' to what your mom told ya about it.
