[Douglas is just sort of sitting around at the bar in the inn, and he's got the 'gear propped up on his bag, which is still filled mostly just with the basics and the things Heather sent him. He's pretty much moved permanently into a room in the inn at this point. Sheldon and Kal-El are fighting over some berries and come pretty near to knocking the 'gear over several times, so it's a while before Douglas can actually pay any attention to the feed he's sending out]

It's been a while since I've done this, hasn't it? Feels like it's been a while, anyway. This time I've actually got a point, though. I've been doin' some odd detective work for people around town lately, and it's got me thinkin'. I know there might not be much demand for this sort of thing, but if anybody needs to hire a private detective, you can contact me anytime. Figured it might do some good to advertise.

[then Kal-El knocks the 'gear over and Douglas sends him a scowl and holds it in his hands rather than risking it getting knocked over again]

I don't charge much. Really just got my room and food expenses to cover, so I'll do whatever you need for pretty cheap. Just send me some details if you have something you want me to work on.Got about twenty years of experience, and there's not a lot I can't handle, I like to think.

[Excuse him for a moment. Harry is just remembering all the harm your detective work has caused and trying to remember his promise to Heather to try and get along with her friend.]

Things might've gone a little... south in the past with this sort of thing. But I've learned more than a couple of lessons about bein' used. What happened before... it's never gonna happen again.

[he makes a grim face]

I figure I need to do my part in helpin' out around Johto, and this is what I do.

[He doesn't say anything for a moment. ...Well he promised he'd try....]

[Douglas for the most part just looks grateful that Harry is trying to get along with him. He gives him a smile]

What types of cases did you normally work back home...aside from kidnapping.

I'll be careful. I'm just hopin' there won't be a lot of insidious cases here.

Well, back home, it was mostly followin' cheating wives around, trying to get proof. Not real exciting. I would rather have been takin' cases that'd actually help people, but there's not a lot of demand for that, I guess.

[he sounds just faintly tired. He's sick of following cheaters around]

Not really.

I used to write true crime as well as mysteries and horror.

[Harry knows how horrible the world is.]

[he nods]

Heather mentioned you were a writer. Are you still workin' on anything?

I've been working on a story here a bit.

Well, I'm glad to hear you haven't given up on writin'. Heather let me read one of your books back home, and I liked it. One of the true crime novels.

Thought it came off as real well informed. Seems like you sure did your research. And the protagonist... I liked that guy.

Thanks. I always try to get all the information I can. ....I think I end up with too much sometimes.

Must've been even worse for you, thinkin' about that sorta thing from a father's standpoint. Makes you worry every little thing is gonna get to them somehow.

[he remembers feeling that way when his son was alive, and he pauses for a brief moment]

No problem. It's the least I can do. [he offers a small smile]

That's always the problem isn't it. Too much information and you spend all your time worrying. To little and you don't know how to keep your kid safe.

Exactly. And you can't find a happy balance, because nothin' you do is ever good enough in your own eyes, as far as bein' prepared for protect 'em from everything.

Sometimes I wonder if anybody really knows how to parent without drivin' themselves crazy.

[a small chuckle]

[Now he's curious.]

Do you have kids?

I think we all would. So we could either punch 'em or get some advice. Take your pick.

[he pauses briefly]

I did. Had a son. He was actually a lot like Heather, before he started makin' all those bad choices and ended up... well, things didn't end so well for him.

[he looks far away for just a moment]

I'm just glad Heather's smarter than all that. You... you raised her right.

[A small pause. He's well familiar with loss.]

.....I'm sorry to hear that.

[Harry of all people knows what the loss of a child is like.]

[he nods slightly]

Thanks. You never really forget about 'em, even after it's been years...

But it's a good thing at the same time. Not forgettin'.
